Funeral services celebrating the life of Thomas B. Young, 71, of Newark, will be held at the REED-EGAN FUNERAL HOME, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark, 11:30 A.M., Monday, April 25, 2022, with Deacon Patrick Wilson as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Friends and family may call at the funeral home for one hour prior to the funeral service on Monday.

Tom, a parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, died at The Inn at Chapel Grove on Monday, April 18, 2022.  He was born in Dayton, Ohio on April 27, 1950, to the late Philip B. and Rosemary (Robison) Young.

Although Tom was born visually impaired, he did not allow this disability to limit his potential as an educator and longtime basketball coach.  He was a 1968 graduate of Newark Catholic High School and received his Bachelor's Degree in Education and History from Eastern Kentucky University in 1972.

Tom began his 40-year teaching and basketball coaching career at Roosevelt Junior High School.  He then coached basketball at Newark High School prior to teaching history and coaching at Newark Catholic High School, Licking Valley High School, eventually retiring as the basketball coach at Granville Christian Academy.  Over the years Tom mentored many student athletes and made many life-long friendships.

As a sport enthusiast, Tom enjoyed watching major league baseball, NCAA basketball, and golf.  He also enjoyed his time in Las Vegas visiting the casinos and playing video poker.

Tom was dedicated to helping others who were visually impaired and also worked for the Center for Visually Impaired, Newark, and the Vision Center in Las Vegas where he resided for a period of time.  Most recently Tom was presented with an Outstanding Service Award by the Licking County Aging Program in recognition of his service to others above the call of duty in his work to the center for visual improvement.  He was also and avid supporter and member of the Lions Club.

The last of his immediate family, Tom is survived by his longtime friends, Bill and Terri Rogers and their families; as well as many former students, players, and colleagues who continued to keep Tom as a part of their family.

In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his brother, Philip R. Young in 2021.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Tom's name can be made to the Center for the Visually Impaired c/o Licking County Aging Program, 1058 East Main Street, Newark, Ohio 43055.

The family would like to thank the staffs of Inn at Chapel Grove and  Genesis Hospice of Zanesville for their dedicated care and compassion shown to Tom for these past several years.
