Obituary

Shirley Isabel Stare, 88, of Newark, passed peacefully into her Heavenly Father's arms, on Thursday, November 23, 2023, at SharonBrooke Assisted Living.  Shirley, one of six children, was born November 30, 1934, in Newark, to the late Frank and Isabel (Hodgson) Stare.  Shirley was a joyful spirit and true blessing to all those whose lives she touched.

She was a cheerleader and member of the 1952 graduating class of St. Francis de Sales High School, and lifelong parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. Devoted to her faith, Shirley always spoke kind and positive words and reflected a happy disposition.  Shirley's family was her top priority and she adored family cookouts, birthday parties, and holiday celebrations.  Her famous fun-loving jokes brought much laughter, and she would often recite her original poetry.  Shirley always made an effort to play with the children, trying all the games and activities.  She also enjoyed sharing family history and telling the children stories about her parents and brothers and sisters.  "Shirley Isabel necessary on a bicycle," as she would call herself, had a cute affinity for frogs and a grand collection of froggy trinkets, which she passed on to the children over the years.  Her sweet smile, lovely voice and precious laugh will echo in our hearts forever.

An avid entertainer, Shirley's love of music was contagious, and she would often break out into song, followed by several dance steps, usually taking the hand of someone nearby for a twirl.  She was a performer at heart and sang and danced in productions with Vaud-Villities (Columbus), her stage family, for nearly four decades.  She also shared her talents with the Licking County Players, Twentieth Century Club Flyers, and sang with the Wayne Martin Orchestra.

Shirley was passionate about her work and enjoyed a long career, working for Phillips 66, United Airlines, and Klingbeil Associates, finally retiring from Casto Communities where she managed the apartment buildings on Mt. Vernon Road and Union Street.  She loved taking long drives and always liked being out and about, noting she "wanted to see the world."

Following in her family's footsteps, Shirley served the Newark community for eight years as Councilwoman for the 2nd Ward.  Her service continued with an appointment to the Licking County Transit Board.

She will be greatly missed by her siblings, Carol Wollenburg, Frank (Dusty) Stare and John Stare (fiancée, Renee Brewer); nine nieces and nephews; 17 great-nieces and nephews; many great-great nieces and nephews; and many close friends.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her sisters, Frances Riggs and Jane M. Stare; and brother-in-law, Thomas Wollenburg

She navigated her final months with grace and dignity, continuing to show deep appreciation and love for her family and their support and care, her smile and sweet nature always persisting.

Shirley will be remembered for her grateful and loving heart.  Her positive, generous, and affectionate character and unwavering commitment to her faith and family will continue to offer inspiration for generations.

Family will receive loved ones and friends at Reed-Egan Funeral Home, 141 Green Wave Drive, 4-7 P.M., Tuesday, November 28, 2023, with a Vigil Service held at 6:30 P.M.

A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Shirley's life will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, November 29, 2023, with Fr. Mike Gentry as celebrant.  Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
