A Funeral Mass for Richard Gordon Hughes, 87, of Newark, will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 11:00 A.M., Monday, June 12, 2017 with Rev. JCP Sullivan, Parish Priest as celebrant. Friends and family may call at the church for one hour prior to the Mass. Inurnment will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Ironton, Ohio.

Richard, a parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, died at Licking Memorial Hospital on Sunday, May 28, 2017. He was born in Ironton, Ohio on August 30, 1929 to the late Riter Elbert and Agnes (Riedel) Hughes.

Richard, a Korean War Veteran, served with the United States Army for 21 years, retiring as a master sergeant. He completed two terms as the Newark City Auditor and was Assistant Auditor with the Ohio Department of Transportation, District 5, retiring in 1995.

Over the years, Richard served his community in many different capacities including the Mental Health Association and LICCO Boards, MRDD, and the ANMAC Foundation. He was a member of the Licking County Players and the Licking County Bicycle Club, completing a cross country bike ride from the Pacific Coast to the Atlantic Coast in 1995. He was also a member of the American Legion, VFW and DVA. He enjoyed attending swim exercise at the YMCA, and the many longtime friends made during these classes.

He is survived by his children, Steven (Karine) Hughes, Linda (William) Shook, and Paul Hughes; 5 grandchildren, Brian (Audra) Van Winkle, Shawn (Mandi) Van Winkle, Max Hughes, Mike, and Tom Hughes; 5 great-grandchildren, Layla, Mila, Petra, and Brayson Van Winkle, and Kiley Applegate; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his wife, JoAnn (Miller) Hughes; his son, Mark Hughes; and his sister, Cleora (Stan) Borowski; his brother, Charles (Irene) Hughes, and his infant sister, Arveta L. Hughes.
