Obituary

A Mass of Christian Burial for R. Richard "Rick" Battat, 78, of Newark, will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 11:00 A.M., Friday, April 26, 2024, with Fr. David Sizemore as celebrant. Friends and family may call at the church for one hour prior to the service. Interment in Cedar Hill Cemetery will immediately follow the Mass with military honors provided by the Licking County Veterans Alliance.

Rick, a parishioner of St. Francis de Sales, died at his home, surrounded by the love of his family, on Monday, April 22, 2024. Born in Kingsville, Ontario, Canada on April 12, 1946, Rick was the adopted son of Robert Charles and Charlotte Mary Jean (Pastorius) Battat.

He attended Cherry Valley Elementary, Wilson Junior High, and was a member of the first class to attend the new "open campus" format at Newark High School. (Coincidentally, his granddaughter was a member of the last class to be a part of this same style campus at NHS.)  Rick received his Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Miami University, (1968) and joined his father in the family business, Walker & Battat Ford, where he worked until their sale to Mathews Ford in the mid 90's.

Rick served with the National Guard and the Army Reserves, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel after 30 years of service. In addition, he was a Paul Harris Fellow of Newark Rotary, joining in 1969 and having multiple years with perfect attendance.

Rick was a family man at heart and supported and loved them above all else. He will be greatly missed by his devoted wife, Nancy Mary (Noll) Battat, whom he married on October 25, 1969; his children, Jennifer Battat, John Battat (fiancé, Brian Lamkin), and Julie Rinderle; grandchildren, Monica (Joshua) Matheson and Christopher Rinderle.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in Rick's name be made to St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 45 Granville, Street, Newark, Ohio 43055.
