Obituary

A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Mildred Viola McKenzie, 99, of Gratiot and formerly of Newark, will be held at The Church of the Blessed Sacrament, 10:30 A.M., Thursday, September 7, 2023, with Fr. Anthony Lonzo as celebrant.  Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Mildred died at the home of her daughter, where she had been living for the last 5 years, on Friday, September 1, 2023.  She was born in Toboso, Ohio on April 11, 1924, to the late David V. and Velva (Victor) Sidle.

She was a 1942 graduate of Hanover Toboso High School and was affectionately known as either "Midge" or "Millie" by family and friends.  Devoted to her Catholic faith, Midge was a longtime parishioner of The Church of the Blessed Sacrament and faithfully volunteered as Sacristan and was a member of their Marian Club. She loved to garden, listen to music, and spent many hours in the kitchen cooking and baking. She loved her family and was always willing to help wherever she could.

She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Vivian A. McKenzie; son, Thomas R. "Bob" McKenzie; 5 grandchildren, Brian, Brad, and Brett McKenzie, Matt (Heather) McCorkle, and Christa (John) McElfresh; 8 great-grandchildren; brother, Wayne (Myrna) Sidle, sisters, Marjorie Schmitt and Verna (Carl Dean) Smith; sister-in-law, Evelyn Sidle; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Midge was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh A. McKenzie; daughter-in-law, Sharon McKenzie; siblings, Dale (June) Sidle, Roy (Eleanor) Sidle, Chester (Shirley, Catherine) Sidle, Kenneth Sidle, and Eleanor (Herbert) Robison.

Friends and family may call from 5-7 P.M, Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at the REED-EGAN FUNERAL HOME, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark, with a Vigil Service held at 6:30 P.M.

In keeping with her wishes, memorials, in lieu of flowers, can be made to the Disabled Veterans of America or the Wounded Warrior Project.
