Obituary

A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary A. Piemonte, 88, of Newark, will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 10:00 A.M., Saturday, January 21, 2023, with Fr. David Sizemore as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Mary, a longtime parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, died at Altercare Newark South on Monday, January 9, 2023.

Born in Windber, Pennsylvania, on August 3, 1934, to the late John and Mary (Jozsi) Mehok, Mary grew up with four older siblings in a coal-company house in an outlying area of town known simply as Mine 37.

Growing up within a large Hungarian-American community, Mary spent her formative years surrounded by Magyar culinary, cultural and religious traditions. While many family conversations took place in Hungarian, Mary often said that her interest in learning the basics of the language derived mostly from her desire to communicate with her grandmother. In later years, however, Mary often leveraged those skills in family settings to mask certain conversations in front her children, much to their consternation.

Mary's life took a significant turn on July 4, 1951, when she met the love of her life, Tony Piemonte, who professed his love for her within hours of their meeting. The two eloped and wed on Thanksgiving of that year.

After raising a family in Windber for several years, the couple moved with their three small sons to Cincinnati in 1962, before finally settling in Newark in 1965. By the late 1960s, Mary had begun to use the typing and shorthand skills she had acquired in high school to work as a secretary at several local companies, including Garwood Industries and Sightseer. In later years she also worked at the Heath Walmart.

Mary will be remembered by all for her dedication to family and friends, her youthful sense of humor, her love of reading and crossword puzzles, her passion for all things Elvis, and her love for her husband Tony, who passed away on September 21, 2022.

She will be greatly missed by her, sons Philip (Mary Kay) Piemonte and Anthony (Sheri Baker) Piemonte; daughter-in-law Cheryl Piemonte; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Carole Piemonte, and several nieces and nephews

In addition to her parents and husband Anthony Piemonte, Mary was preceded in death by her son, John Piemonte; infant daughter, Deborah Piemonte; and siblings, John (Dolly) Mehok, Julius (Twila) Mehok, Veronica (Robert) Lapinsky, and Louis (Delores) Mehok.

Friends and family may call at the Reed-Egan Funeral Home, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark, 5-7 P.M., Friday, January 20, 2023. The Sons of Italy will conduct a service at 5:30 P.M., and a Vigil Service held at 6:30 P.M.
