A Funeral Mass for Laverne G. Flowers, 87, of Newark, will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 10:00 A.M., Saturday, June 6, 2015, with Fr. Michael Reis as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Laverne died at Licking Memorial Hospital on Monday, June 1, 2015 with her family by her side. She was born in Duluth, Minnesota on September 10, 1927 to the late John and Mary (Paukner) Hogquist.
After cooking for the nuns and priests at St. Francis Parish and Newark Catholic High School, she worked as a manager at Western Pancake and Steak House for many years and then as a cashier for ten years at the Newark Air Force Base.
As a longtime parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Laverne was active with both the St. Cecilia and the Sunday Adult Choirs. She volunteered with the Altar Rosary Society, the Ministry of Comfort, and was a member of the Women of St. Francis and ARC Club. Laverne was also a former Girl Scout Leader at St. Francis de Sales Elementary School.
For many years Laverne participated in countless productions of the Twentieth Century Flyer. She held many posts within the Hebron 55+ Club and Buckeye Lake Seniors and was known for her great jokes that made the whole room laugh. Yelling "Bingo" was her favorite word, unless she had to split the pot. Her friendly attitude made everyone feel welcome.
Laverne will be greatly missed by her husband of 64 years, Kenneth Flowers, of the home; her daughters, Teri Molnar, Beverly (Danny) Ferguson, and Nancy (Rick) Buehler; 6 grandchildren, Lisa (Flowers) McKenna, Rob Hydo, John Ferguson, Rose Ferguson, Jennifer Molnar, and R.J. Buehler; 9 great-grandchildren; her brother John (Mary Ann) Hogquist; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Laverne was preceded in death by her sisters, Rose, Margaret, and Geraldine.
Friends and family may call from 4-7 P.M. Friday, June 5, 2015 at the REED-EGAN FUNERAL HOME, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark, where a Vigil and Rosary Service will be held at 6:30 P.M.
The family requests that memorials be made to St. Leonard Catholic Church, 57 Dorsey Mill Road, Heath, Ohio 43056
