Juanita Covas Swain, 95, passed away at Middleton Care Center, Granville, OH, on Monday, January 4, 2021.  She was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico on April 6, 1925, to the late Vincent and Isabel (Serrano) Covas.

Juanita grew up in Ponce, and moved to Philadelphia to attend Chestnut Hill College.  She met and married the love of her life, Don Swain, and together they lived in Denver, Colorado and Sydney, Australia.  Returning to the states, they settled in Towson, Maryland, where she raised her family and worked in the blood bank at St. Joseph Hospital, retiring in 1987.

She was active in the Puerto Rican Club of Baltimore County and would make delightful food for their annual festival.  She was also active in the RLDS Church and the women's club.

In 2010, Juanita moved to Newark, Ohio with the assistance of the Newark Catholic Volleyball team, memorializing this day with a photo of the team and the moving van which she displayed on her refrigerator for as long as she lived on Church Street.

She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Leslie Swain (Thomas) Marcelain of Newark, OH; daughter-in-law, Jeanette Swain of Virginia; 6 grandchildren, Sydney (Adam) Gast, Daniel Marcelain, Grant Marcelain, Elizabeth (Brett) Richardson, Steven Swain, and Matthew Swain; sister, Catin Oliver, of Ponce, Puerto Rico; brother Michael (Anita) Covas of Ponce, Puerto Rico; and many nieces and nephews living in Philadelphia, Cleveland, Australia, and Puerto Rico.

In addition to her parents, Juanita was preceded by her husband, Don Swain, whom she married in 1952; sons, David Swain and Gary Swain; sister, Haydee Covas Seward; and brother, Vincent Covas.

No calling hours will be observed.  A celebration of life for the Puerto Rican cutie will be held at a future date.
