Obituary

A Mass of Christian Burial for John Battista Vescio, 87, of Newark, will be held at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, September 16, 2025, with Fr. Anthony Dinovo celebrating.  Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Newark.

John died at his home with the love of his family by his side on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.  He was born in Sewickley, Pennsylvania on January 30, 1938, to the late Gennaro and Tommasina Vescio.

He was a graduate of Sewickley High School and completed several courses with American Bridge Engineering.

John's profound Catholic faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he faced life's challenges with courage and unwavering trust in God's plan. He was a parishioner of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, where he ushered for many years. He was a member of the Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary, and his faithful recitation of the rosary was a testament to his deep love and devotion for Christ's mother. He was a kind and generous person, always willing to help someone in need.

John worked as a structural steel draftsman and checker for Schuler Engineering in Newark for 17 years. He retired from Ohio Steel industries where he had been the engineering department head for 18 years.

His interests included softball, golf, and traveling, especially cruises. He enjoyed restoring old homes, purchasing and thoughtfully renovating several properties in an effort to provide affordable rental housing for others.

John will be greatly missed by his wife, Karen (Murphy) Vescio; daughter, Jo-Ella (William) Evans; foster daughter, Vicki (Joe) Dunlap; step-children, Ronald DeVore and Colleen DeVore; step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ed Whren, Daniel (Erica) Fleig, Rene (Gerald) Fleig and Donna Fleig; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Ellen (Fleig) Vescio; half-brother, Jerry Vescio; sister, Rosemarie Whren; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Arnold Fleig, John (Leota) Fleig and Linda Fleig.
