Obituary

John M. "Mike" Benninghoff, 72, of Newark passed away at Licking Memorial Hospital on Thursday, December 24, 2020.  He was born in Columbus, Ohio on February 14, 1948, to the late Bettie Benninghoff.

A 1959 graduate of Millsersport High School, Mike was a United States Air Force Veteran serving in Thailand during the Vietnam War.  For many years, Mike was the owner and operator of Southgate Carryout as well as the original Beverage Source of Newark.  He was known to many as the "Wine Guy" and took great passion in sharing his knowledge while educating others about wine.

Mike was a genuine caregiver devoted to his family, and loved attending the school and sporting events of his daughters and grandchildren. He also greatly enjoyed golfing, playing cards, and traveling.

He will be greatly missed by his daughters, Lori (Eric) Tatum and Jodi Benninghoff; grandchildren, Madalyn and McCafrey Tatum; sister, Shawna West; devoted cousins, Ron (Patty) Ruppersburg and Cheryl (Rod) Booth; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his mother, Mike was preceded in death by his wife and soulmate, Lynne (Selhorst) Benninghoff; and special aunt and uncle, Virginia and Joseph Ruppersburg.

Calling hours will be held at the REED-EGAN FUNERAL HOME, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark, 5-8 P.M., Wednesday, December 30, 2020.  Masks will be required and social distancing without lingering is requested.  The family acknowledges the difficulty of the pandemic and wants to express their understanding for those unable to attend.  Cards and expressions of sympathy will be accepted by the funeral home, and online condolences can be left by visiting: www.reedegan.com.

Private graveside services with military honors celebrating the life of Mike will be held in the chapel at Resurrection Cemetery, Columbus.

Memorials in Mike's name can be made to the American Cancer Society or to a charity of your choice.
