A Mass of Christian Burial for John A. Fischer, 94, of Newark, will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 10:30 A.M., Monday, March 9, 2026, with Fr. Mike Gentry as celebrant. Calling will be held at the church for one hour prior to the Mass. Inurnment in St. Joseph Cemetery, Newark, will be held at a later date.

John, a United States Navy Airman and Weekend Warrior, died at Licking Memorial Hospital on Sunday, March 1, 2026. He was born in Columbus, Ohio on January 3, 1932, to the late Adolf and Emily (Rowe) Fischer.

John attended St. Augusta Elementary prior to moving with his family to the Newark area where he became a graduate of Blessed Sacrament Elementary and St. Francis de Sales High School, Class of 1951. Following, he earned his Associate Degree from The Ohio State University, studying History and Business. John was a dedicated employee with a long career in retail, working as the general manager of Seaway and then serving many years as the manager at Main Hardware. He loved working with the public and getting to know the many customers he served over his career.

He was a longtime parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church where he volunteered with the St. Cecelia Choir. He was a member of Newark Maennerchor, enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden, and was an avid fisherman, earning multiple first place "Bass King" awards as member of the Buckeye Lake Bass Club.

John will be dearly missed by his wife of 69 years, Nancy L. (Martin) Fischer; his children, Rita (Rick) Dupler, Joyce (John) Scullion, Joseph Fischer (Larry Johnson), and Mark (Sherry) Fischer; 6 grandchildren, Jamie Harper, Rachel Harper, Emily Scullion, Ali Scullion Schram, Lauren Fischer, and Andrew Fischer; 3 great-grandchildren, Anna Redman, Taylor Farmer, and Conner Armes; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Fischer; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his grandson, Bryan Anthony Harper; siblings, Robert (JoAnne) Fischer, Rita (Gerald) Truck, and Phil Fischer.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 115 Wilson Street, Newark, Ohio 43055.
