Obituary

A Funeral Mass for JoAnn Hughes, 84, of Newark, will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, December 10, 2014, with Rev. JCP Sullivan, Parish Priest, as celebrant. Friends and family may call at the church for one hour prior to the Funeral Mass. Private inurnment will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Ironton.

JoAnn died at Licking Memorial Hospital on Friday, December 5, 2014. She was born in Ironton, Ohio on November 3, 1930 to the late Paul and Lucy (Anglin) Miller.

JoAnn was a longtime parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church where she volunteered with the Respect Life Group and was a Eucharistic Minister to the homebound. She was retired from Licking Memorial Hospital where she worked as a nurse aide for 25 years. JoAnn was often called an "Angel of Mercy" by her husband for the countless gestures of kindness and genuine concern she carried for others during her employment and for many years following her retirement.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Richard Hughes, of the home; her children and their spouses, Steven and Karine Hughes of Atlanta, Georgia, Linda and William Shook of Hebron, and Paul Hughes of Baltimore, Maryland; 5 grandchildren, Brian (Audra) Van Winkle, Shawn (Mandi) Van Winkle, Max, Mike, and Tom Hughes; 5 great-grandchildren, Layla, Milena, Petra, and Brayson Van Winkle, and Kiley Applegate; her brother, David (Cindy) Miller of Marietta; her sisters, Janie (Jack) Mahlmeister of North Olmstead, and Catherine (Marc) Scott of Lancaster; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, JoAnn was preceded in death by her son, Mark R. Hughes; and her infant brother, Stephen.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Heartbeats of Licking County, 336 E. Main Street, Newark, OH 43055; or the Foundation for Hospice of Central Ohio, PO Box 430, Newark, Ohio, 43058.
