James Robert Oberfield's Obituary
A Funeral Mass for James Robert Oberfield, 87, of Granville, will be held at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, 10:00 A.M., Saturday, December 12, 2015, with Fr. Jonathan Wilson as celebrant.
Jim, a United States Army Veteran, died at his home on Tuesday, December 8, 2015. He was born in Newark, Ohio on November 28, 1928 to the late Alfred and Agnes Marie (Murphy) Oberfield.
Jim was a graduate of St. Francis de Sales High School and lifelong parishioner of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament where he also sang in the choir. He worked as an exchange switch operator for the Newark Telephone Company, eventually retiring from Alltel. He was an avid bicyclist, having cycled through Ireland, and was a founding member of the Licking County Bike Club. Jim enjoyed traveling, canoeing, and loved working in his vegetable garden and maintaining the compost pile. He had a huge heart and passion for his dogs which he loved unconditionally.
He is survived by his children, Michael (Cheryl) Oberfield, Christine McKenna, Teresa (Tom) Moore, Meme (Brad) Shumaker, Mark (Vicky) Oberfield, Rita (Craig) Peirano, Matthew (Megan) Oberfield, and their mother, Mary Jo (Durbin) Oberfield; ten grandchildren; one great- grandchild and one on the way; his brothers, Bernard (Evelyn) Oberfield, John "Jack" (Ann) Oberfield; his sister, Mary Deardurff; sister-in-law, Dorothy Oberfield and Rose Ann Oberfield; brother-in-law, Barney Smith; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his brothers, Richard and Joseph; and his sisters, Rita Ann Smith and Ruth (Don) Dittoe; and brother-in-law Jack Deardurff.
Friends and family may call from 4-7 P.M., Friday, December 11, 2015 at the REED-EGAN FUNERAL HOME, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark, where a Vigil Service will be held at 6:30 P.M.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, 394 East Main Street, Newark, Ohio 43055; or the Licking County Animal Shelter, 544 Dog Leg Road, Heath, Ohio 43056.
