A Funeral Mass for James F. Marquis, 79, of Newark, will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, December 19, 2017 with Fr. David Sizemore as celebrant.  Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Jim, a United States Air Force Veteran, died at the Price Road Health and Rehabilitation Center on Friday, December 15, 2017.  He was born in Newark, Ohio on September 26, 1938 to the late Charles E. and Mary E. (Ohler) Marquis.

Jim was a parishioner at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and volunteered with weekly adoration and collection tallying. He was retired from Rockwell, working many years as a welder and heat treater.

Known to many as "Coach Marquis", Jim dedicated 50 years to coaching countless athletes in the Licking County area.  Beginning in 1968 through a chance meeting with his sister's neighbor, a former Newark Catholic coach, Jim was presented with the opportunity to assist with a team, and so his coaching career was born.  Over the years Jim coached multiple sports at Newark Catholic High School, St. Francis de Sales and Blessed Sacrament Schools which included girl's basketball, track, and football.  His impact on young athletes went far beyond the court/ field, demonstrating lessons and lifelong values.  He was inducted into the Newark Catholic Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 2011.

He will be greatly missed by his devoted wife of 56 years, Janet (Stauffer) Marquis; children, Laura (Chris) Bell, Karen (David) Scott, and Ted (Sara) Marquis; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; his brother, John J. (Judy) Marquis; sisters, Judy (Pete) Dodd, Emily Jane Goodin, Mary (Gary) Nelson, and Joann Haslinger; brother-in-law, Deacon Gordon Kunkler; aunt, Betty Ohler; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Janet Kunkler; and brother-in-law, Gary Haslinger.

The family requests memorials in Jim's name to the Newark Catholic High School Foundation, 1 Green Wave Drive, Newark, OH 43055.

Friends and family may call from 4-7 P.M., Monday, December 18, 2017 at the REED-EGAN FUNERAL HOME, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark, where a Vigil Service will be held at 6:30 P.M.
