A Mass of Christian Burial for Herbert "Herb" J. Murphy Jr., 92, of Granville will be held at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, 12 Noon, Thursday, January 4, 2024, with Msgr. Paul Enke as celebrant and Fr. Timothy Hayes as concelebrant. Calling hours will be held at the church, 4-7 P.M., Wednesday, January 3, 2024.

Herb passed away peacefully in the presence of his family on Wednesday, December 27, 2023. He was born April 1931, in Newark, Ohio, to the late Herbert and Margaret B. Murphy Sr.

A graduate of St. Francis de Sales High School, Herb attended United States Military Academy West Point and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Duke University. Following college, Herb worked at Newark Asphalt Paving Company and later formed Mid-Ohio Development Corp, which is celebrating its 60th year in business.

Herb was a lifelong resident of Licking County and initiated numerous philanthropic endeavors throughout his community. He served on the Board of Directors with Central Trust Company & Englefield Oil Company. Herb was also Past President of Newark Rotary and was a lifetime member of Moundbuilders Country Club.

He was a devoted longtime parishioner of St. Edward Catholic Church and served on their Parish Council and Building Committee. As a hobbyist, Herb enjoyed traveling the world with his wife Patricia, boating, scuba diving, and photography, publishing several photo books.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of 68 years, Patricia (Roney) Murphy; five children, Dr. Kathleen Murphy, Marilyn (Jeffery) Houck, Michael (Robin) Murphy, Patrick (Cathy) Murphy, and Roney (Nadine) Murphy; 7 grandchildren; Amber, Ryan (Mariah) Sarah (Joshua), Kelsey, Shawn (Britnee), Shannon (Colton), and Collin; 9 great-grandchildren; brother, Frank B. (Kay) Murphy; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Herb's name to St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, 785 Newark Granville Road, Granville, OH 43023; or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
