A Funeral Mass for Harry C. Mason, 100, of Newark, will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 10:30 A.M., Thursday, July 20, 2017, with Fr. David Sizemore as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery with military honors provided by the Licking County Veterans Alliance.
Harry, a United States Army WWII Veteran, died at Licking Memorial Hospital on Sunday, July 16, 2017. He was born in Buchtel, Ohio on October 11, 1916 to the late Edwin J. and Katherine (Gabel) Mason.
Due to the early death of his mother, Harry lived in a Catholic orphanage for 12 years and during this time his faith and love for God grew. He was a parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church and was retired from the B&O/ C&O Rail Road where he worked for many years.
Harry enjoyed bowling and was known for growing tomatoes, having at one time close to 300 plants. At the age of 80, Harry began writing poetry and in celebration of his 100th birthday his sons had his poems published in a book titled "Living". In this compilation it is evident that Harry's spiritual strength, conviction to his Catholic faith, and love of nature were his poetic inspiration.
He is survived by his sons, Michael (Barb), John (Tamara), and Gregory (Joyce) Mason; grandchildren, Ryan, David, John, Cary, Brian, and Tim (Kristin), great-grandchildren, Mathew, Keira, and Trey; longtime neighbors, David and Ersolene Persinger and Will and Tammy Brumfield; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Harry was preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve (Antosz) Mason in 1988; and his siblings, George, Rose Anna, and Edna May Mason, Frances Hodge, and Catherine Mason.
Friends and family may call from 5-7 P.M., Wednesday, July 19, 2017, at the REED-EGAN FUNERAL HOME, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark, where a Vigil Service will be held at 6:30 P.M.
