A Funeral Mass for Gerald Michael Sommer, 80, of Newark, will be held at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, 10:30 A.M., Monday, June 15, 2015, with Fr. Jonathan Wilson as celebrant. Interment will be held in St. Peter in Chains Catholic Cemetery, Wheelersburg, Ohio.

Jerry, a Portsmouth Notre Dame High School graduate, died at his home on Tuesday, June 9, 2015. He was born in Portsmouth, Ohio on April 21, 1935 to the late Louis Frederick and Ann Marie (Kopp) Sommer.

Jerry was a parishioner of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He served with the National Guard for 13 years and was retired from Ohio Power where he worked as a regional line supervisor. He greatly enjoyed driving his 4-wheel drive Jeep Wrangler, especially through Colorado.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Elissa (Blanc) Sommer; his children, Dr. Deborah Sommer, Edward (Mary) Sommer, Christine Singer, and Timothy Sommer; step-daughter, Kendi (Matt) Passwaters; his grandchildren, Evan Sommer. Jessica (John) DeSimone, Linus Singer, and Ryley Passwaters; his great-grandchildren, Laila and Gavin; his siblings, David (Maryann) Sommer, Mary Ann (Larry) Davis, and Mark (Celina) Sommer; his sister-in-law, Ann Sommer; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his brothers, Fred and John Sommer.

Friends and family may call from 2-5 P.M., Sunday, June 14, 2015 at the REED-EGAN FUNERAL HOME, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark, where a Vigil Service will be held at 4:30 P.M.
