Obituary

A Mass of Christian Burial for Dorothy "Dottie" Martin, 85, of Newark, will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 2, 2019, with Fr. David Sizemore as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Dorothy, born in Hanover, Ohio on April 18, 1933, died at the Sharonbrooke Senior Living Center on Tuesday, January 29, 2019. She was defined by her Catholic faith, family, friends, work, and community. She put her love of God and family above all things. Dorothy's friendships were cherished gifts to her. A pure-hearted, gentle, sweet and kind soul to her core, Dorothy embraced everyone she met with a quiet and loving smile, spirit, and way. Her love of laughter was contagious to all those around her. Dorothy's beautiful fashion sense was reflected in her love of bright colors and tasteful jewelry.

Her love, patience and compassion for others had no limits or boundaries. For over thirty years, she and her beloved husband, Jim, proudly built their Shaklee business, which Dorothy carried on after his passing.

Dorothy was a devoted parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church where she loved to sing with the choir and was a member of their Women of St. Francis, ARC Club, and Ministry of Comfort. Dorothy's love of the Sacraments and her Catholic faith was foundational to her life and marriage. She received her First Holy Communion on her Wedding Day, June 9, 1956. She entrusted all to Jesus and the Blessed Mother. Her heart was filled with unceasing joy by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dorothy's legacy of grace, strength and faith will live on in all who love her.

Dorothy is survived by her sons, Thomas "Shaun" Martin and Timothy O'Neill (Mary) Martin; five grandchildren, Ashlee, Nathanial (Courtney), Allee (Sam Rominger), Quinlan, and Meghann; great-grandchildren, Cooper, Reese, and Vivian; brother, Dean (Vernie) Smith; sister-in-law, Elaine Smith; longtime neighbor and friend, Susan Reid; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Edwin and Agnes (Achcraft) Smith, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, James R. Martin; and her brothers Paul (Irma Smith-DeVault) Smith and Dale Smith.

Friends and family may call from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, February 1, 2019, at the Reed-Egan Funeral Home, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark, where a Vigil Service will be held at 6:30 p.m.
