A Mass of Christian Burial for Donato "Dan" Guanciale, 90, of Newark, will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 11:00 A.M., Saturday, December 1, 2018, with Fr. David Sizemore as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Newark.

Dan passed away at his home with family by his side on Monday, November 26, 2018. He was born in Collelongo, Aquila, Italy on April 6, 1928 to the late Domenic and Carolina (Mancini) Guanciale.

Dan immigrated to the United States with his family on the Italian Liner S.S. Rex on December 31, 1938. He spent the rest of his life in Newark, enjoying return trips to Italy every two years. He was a devoted husband and family man, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren being the highlights of his life.

He was a 1948 graduate of St. Francis de Sales High School and attended Denison University from 1952-1956. After his 40-year career as a local Realtor and Real Estate Developer, Dan kept active with a strict daily schedule which consisted of exercising at the YMCA, visiting his office and then Moundbuilders Country Club to enjoy a game of golf and play gin rummy with his many friends and acquaintances.

Devoted to his faith, Dan was an active and long-time parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church where he served as an usher and helped raise funds for renovations within the church and school. He was a 3rd Degree Member of Council 721 of the Knights of Columbus, and a 4th Degree Member of the Bishop J. Ready Assembly 830 of the Knights of Columbus.

Dan had a lifelong interest in the local community and athletics, and strongly supported both. For 38 years Dan served as treasurer of the Newark Catholic High School Athletic Association and was inducted into the Newark Catholic Hall of Fame with the Award of Merit in 1998. He was also instrumental in the development of the Newark Catholic High School Foundation.

Dan's local involvement and awards included, but not limited to: Life Senator Newark Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) 1965-2010, receiving the Licking County Outstanding Young Man of the Year in 1963; charter member of the Licking County Board of MRDD serving as chairman of the Eleanor S. Weiant Building Committee (formerly Starlight School); 42-year member of the Sons of Italy Rinascimento Lodge; Licking County Board of Realtors; State and National Association of Realtors; Coldwell-Banker King Thompson Community Service Award recipient, 2005; and member of the Newark Moose Lodge 499.

He will be greatly missed by his four children, Patrick (Carol) Guanciale, Robin (Thomas) Flaherty, Tina (Charles "Chip") Taft, and Dino (Tina) Guanciale; seven grandchildren, Andrew (Jill) Guanciale, Carolina (William) Lavery and Abby (Ross) Graves, Gabriella, Isabella, Donatella and Daniella Guanciale; five great-grandsons, Cole Lavery, Hudson Lavery, Luke Guanciale, Rocco Browning, and Bob Graves; great-granddaughter, Frankie Graves; sister-in-law, Bonnie Guanciale; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Patricia McCann Guanciale, who died June 14, 2001; brother, Francesco "Frank" Guanciale; infant sister, Columba; sister-in-law Margaret Goff; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Friends and family may call from 3-7 P.M., Friday, November 30, 2018 at the REED-EGAN FUNERAL HOME, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark, where The Sons of Italy will conduct a service at 7 PM, to be followed by the Vigil Service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials in Dan's name be made to the Newark Catholic High School Foundation or Athletic Association, 1 Green Wave Drive, Newark, Ohio 43055; or the Foundation for Hospice of Central Ohio, PO Box, 430, Newark, Ohio 43058.
