Obituary

A Funeral Mass for Daniel F. Swickard, 68, of Newark, will be held at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, 10:00 A.M., Monday, July 2, 2018, with Msgr. Paul Enke as celebrant.

Dan, a parishioner of St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, died at Ohio State University Medical Center on Wednesday, June 27, 2018.  He was born in Steubenville, Ohio on June 11, 1950 to the late Frank L. and Hazel J. (Kunkel) Swickard.

Dan was a graduate of Toronto High School and Bethany College where he also played football for four years.  Dan entered the field of Special Education and taught at the Jefferson County Board of DD and the Edison School District, and eventually became the Superintendent of the Harrison County Board of DD. During this time Dan was vital in establishing the Special Olympics in the Steubenville area

In the fall of 1983 Dan moved to Newark and became the Program Director for a Licking County based Residential Provider that provided services throughout Ohio and Louisiana. In 1989 he purchased a portion of that company and formed Community Living Concepts, Inc. (CLC). In 1994, he and Randy Nipps became the founding partners of Consumer Support Services, which provides supports and services to individuals with disabilities throughout the State of Ohio. Dan served on many boards and committees throughout his career.

Dan was a season ticket holder for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Ohio State Buckeyes. He was a member of the Ohio State Presidents Club and a member of the Newark Catholic and Bethany College Hall of Fame. Dan also enjoyed his time on the golf course.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Paula (Tenney) Swickard; sons, Todd (Sara Cordle) and Chris (Jody); grandchildren, Halen, Lily, Johnny and Isaac; brother, Gregg Swickard; sister, Allison Jean Nave; Randy Nipps (Business Partner) and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by his sister, Donna Jean Swickard; and his brother-in-law, Jim Nave.

Friends and family may call at the REED-EGAN FUNERAL HOME, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark, 4-8 P.M., Sunday, July 1, 2018. Casual dress is requested for calling hours and the funeral.

The family requests that memorials in Dan's name be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 230 East Ohio Street, Suite 500, Chicago, Illinois 60611; or the Newark Catholic High School Foundation, 1 Green Wave Drive, Newark, Ohio 43055.
