Obituary

Funeral services celebrating the life of Carolyn Marie (Szczotka) Velican, 80, of Newark, will be held at the REED-EGAN FUNERAL HOME, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark, 12 Noon, Monday, August 7, 2023, with Msgr. Paul Enke as celebrant. Friends and family may call at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service on Monday. Interment will follow in St. Jospeh Catholic Cemetery, Newark.

Carolyn, a parishioner of St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, died at SharonBrooke Assisted Living on Thursday, August 3, 2023. She was born in Warren, Ohio on August 6, 1942, to the late Stanley and Mary (Krutak) Szczotka.

Following her 1960 graduation from Niles McKinley High School, Carolyn married Dick Velican in 1961. She started her work career with Prudential Insurance as a teller and eventually became the Assistant Office Supervisor, followed by Metropolitan Insurance as an office manager, and then a retail banker for Bank One. In addition, she taught ceramic classes for many years and participated in many craft bazaars with her daughters.

Carolyn was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved her family with all of her heart. Carolyn leaves them to mourn in her passing, but to rejoice in her peace of being with her Lord and her husband, Dick, plus family members who have gone before her. She will be greatly missed by her daughters and sons-in-law, Renee (Gregory) Fracker and Michelle (Chuck) Miller; her granddaughters, Ainslie (Michael) Linn and Ashlie (Zackery) Shumaker; great-grandchildren, Hadley, Boone, and Creed; brother-in-law, Bill (Kay) Velican; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Richard "Dick" Velican, who passed away on January 10, 2012; sisters, Mary (Joseph) Feher and Beatrice (Edward) Ratkay; father-in-law and mother-in-law, John (Catherine) Velican, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John (Betty) Velican, Nick (Mary) Krull, Ed (Shirley) Bires.

The family requests memorials in Carolyn's name be made to Hospice of Central Ohio, 2269 Cherry Valley Road, Newark, Ohio 43055.
