Obituary

A Funeral Mass for Bernard "Barney" P. Smith, 87, of Newark, will be held at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, 10:00 A.M., Thursday, March 23, 2017, with Msgr. Paul Enke as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery with military honors provided by the Licking County Veterans Alliance.


Barney, a United States Army Korean War Veteran, died at the Selma Markowitz Care Center of Hospice of Central Ohio on Monday, March 20, 2017. He was born in Newark, Ohio on April 4, 1929 to the late James Edwin and Mary Pauline (Murphy) Smith.


Barney was retired from the Ohio Department of Transportation where he worked for many years as a carpenter. Prior to this, he worked in the family business; P. Smith & Sons Lumber Company, which was started by his grandfather.


He was a long time parishioner of St Edward Catholic Church in Granville. Earlier in his life he attended both St Francis and Blessed Sacrament Catholic Churches. Barney was devoted to his wife, his family, and his faith, often ending his conversations with "God bless you."

Barney worked with wood his entire life. He was fond of trees and became a member/supporter of the Dawes Arboretum.


He is survived by his 5 children, Jane Winters (Michael Farley), Susan (Dale) Hampshire, Barney (Theresa) Smith Jr., Ed (Lisa) Smith, Jonathan (Stacy) Smith; 12 grandchildren, Sara (Mike) Robison, Michael Winters, Joe Hampshire, Lisa (Jacob) Muff, Amy (Matthew) Greenert, Crystal Morrow, Stephanie Smith, Jennifer (Mike) O'Brian, Greg, Nathan, Vincent, and Miranda Smith; 6 great-grandchildren, Zachary, Joseph, Brady, Reagan, Aubrey, and Jordan; his sister, Patricia O'Neil; and several nieces and nephews.


In addition to his parents, Barney was preceded in death by his wife, Rita Ann (Oberfield) Smith; and his brother, James E. Smith.


Friends and family may call at the REED-EGAN FUNERAL HOME, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark, 5-7 P.M., Wednesday, March 22, 2017 where a Vigil Service will be held at 5 P.M.


The family requests that memorials in Barney's name be made to Dawes Arboretum, 7770 Jacksontown Rd. SE, Newark, Ohio 43056 and the Selma Markowitz Care Center of Hospice of Central Ohio.
