Obituary

A Funeral Mass for Alma Louise Smith, 89, of Newark, will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 10:30 A.M., Friday, May 18, 2018, with Fr. David Sizemore as celebrant.  Inurnment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.  The family will receive friends in Johnson Hall of the Lamy Center following the burial.

Alma, a lifelong parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, died at the Selma Markowitz Care Center of Hospice of Central Ohio on Monday, May 14, 2018.  She was born in Newark, Ohio on July 8, 1928 to the late Ernest and Gertrude (Hofacker) Thoma.

A graduate of St. Francis de Sales High School, Alma worked as an educational aid with Newark City Schools.  She also worked at the Midland Theater, H.L. Art Jewelers, State Farm and was as a realtor with several local real estate agencies.  She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 387, Newark Elks Lodge 391, and the American Legion.  Alma also enjoyed playing euchre and bingo at Newark Catholic.

She is survived by her children, James P. (Nancee) Smith, Robert E. Smith (Kathie Shamell), Sue Ann Smith, and Mary Jane Smith; grandchildren, Amy Smith, Tiffany (Brian) Towns, and Jessica Hewitt; her great-grandchildren, Payne Hogg, Reese Towns, Blake Towns, Dru Henry, Blair Henry, and Spencer Hewitt; her sister, Dorothy Thoma; dear neighbors, Rick and Jerry Barricklow and their son, Adam; and longtime friend, Linda Fink.

In addition to her parents, Alma was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Smith Jr, in 1977.
