Darlene, a lifelong parishioner of The Church of the Blessed Sacrament, died at her home on Thursday, June 2, 2011. She was born in Newark, Ohio on February 1, 1929 to the late Carl and Vera (Rambo) Smith.
Darlene graduated from Newark High School in 1946 with many business awards, including a scholarship to Capital University. She worked as the executive secretary to Mr. Beggs of the Styron Beggs Co., formerly of Newark.
On June 19, 1948 Darlene married the love of her life, Herman David Spring, at the rectory of Blessed Sacrament. Being a wife, mother and grandmother was always the first priority in her life. Whether she was volunteering for the school PTA, being a Boy Scout Den mother, or spending many hours helping out in the school cafeterias, Darlene was always willing to support her children in their many activities. She even enjoyed taking on the fruit and fruitcake sales with the Newark High Band parents.
Darlene enjoyed gardening with her husband, playing bridge with her close friends from high school, and was an avid genealogist tracing her many ancestors. Darlene is survived by her children and their spouses, Elaine and Jay Van Hoose of Rocky Mount, NC, Janette and Kenneth Ellis of Enon, Ohio, Larry and Terry Spring of Newark, Roger Spring (Lynda Shuler) of Raceland, KY, Mark and Kimberly Spring of Newark, and Cherie Meyer of Rocky Mount, NC; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; her brother and sister-in-law, Jerry L. and Barbara Smith of Trinway, Ohio; her sister, Rosalie Kelley of Newark; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Darlene was preceded in death by her husband, Herman D. Spring; and twin great-granddaughters.
